Volatility Update

Last week in this column, I forecasted an increase in volatility. This week delivered. Well, mostly, today delivered the volatility, and I expect that we’re not done with it.

Why? As I mentioned, I’m watching the Bollinger Bands. They’re still historically narrow and indicate that volatility should continue to expand. In other words, bullish and bearish investors have been fighting, and one or the other is about to win. We should see the market begin to trend again soon.

Here’s an updated chart:

ThinkOrSwim

I’ve also added two boxes to the chart. The red one shows this week’s trading. We lost 1.66% this week. The green one shows that the S&P 500 is still up 2.2% for the year, which isn’t so bad, considering that if stocks continued at this pace, we’d be up around 15% for the year. I doubt it’ll be that easy.

Our 2025 Top Picks Are Beating the S&P 500

At the end of last year, we asked our contributors to give us their best ideas for 2025, and I thought it would be good to see how we’re doing. Are we beating the S&P 500?

Our picks are up an average of 8.5%, beating the S&P 500 by more than 6 percentage points. Nicely done Pro Team!

Our three top performing picks were Federal National Mortgage Association FNMA, Palantir PLTR, and Intel INTC and I’d like to briefly highlight Intel today.

Peter Tchir is prohibited from picking individual names. However, in his end of year article, he clearly hinted that Intel should have a strong 2025 because it would benefit from your tax dollars helping it to build a new chip-making facility.

Here’s a chart and the more technical analysis-focused readers will notice the potential for a gap fill at 29.

Well done Peter!

Rivian Q4 Earnings Coverage

This week, our team tried something new. Hedge fund manager Brad Ginesin and I decided to cover EV maker Rivian’s Q4 earnings. We recorded a quick video to let viewers know what to watch for and then published Brad’s additional thoughts once Rivian reported. Next week, I’ll write up a technical analysis of Rivian stock and then share my thoughts on the model lineup. Rivian lent me an R1T to test, and you'll have to wait to read my impressions on the truck.

You can see the first two parts of the analysis here and here.

These were quick hit analyses, and we hope you found the coverage valuable. We’d like to do more of these in the future.

Some Favorites From Around the Arena

Outside of TheStreet Pro, here’s some other fun stuff to read.

I’m a fan of whiskey, but it’s not a fan of me. However, I owe a friend a nice bottle as repayment for front-row Peter Gabriel tickets, and the bottle discussed in this article from Men’s Journal might be the one.

Although this article’s a bit long, it’s an incredible adventure and looks like the kind of school that might come in handy. You can read all about the Navy Seal Snow Survival School in this article, also on Men’s Journal.

I’ve had to buy two new cars this year. TheStreet’s James Ochoa knows a thing or two about cars, and I always consult him. Here, he writes about reliable cars that cost less per month than that high-end bottle of whiskey in the article above.

Last, while it’s still ski season, here’s one from Powder Magazine. And it’s all photography. The best ski photos of 2024.

Have a great weekend!
