We have a smaller offering of eye-catching items to share this week, and that's because the folks at the Acquired podcast are simply too good at what they do. Their latest episode continues their deep dive into Google  (GOOGL)  and digs deep into the company’s AI efforts. Talk about a timely topic, and man, do they go the distance. Given the length of that podcast, we’re holding off with a new book recommendation and only sharing a handful or so of articles.

If you have a recommendation to share, we’d love to hear about it in the Comments section below.

Now enjoy this latest offering of Sunday Soup.

Articles 📰

The Happiness of Choosing to Walk Alone

''Going along with an untruth for fear of disagreeing with others is a form of self-betrayal that will make you miserable.''

The Incredible Growing Refrigerator

"Americans constantly want more, so it’s little surprise that refrigerators have grown nearly every year since 1980, when the Association of Home Appliance Manufacturers (AHAM) began keeping track. In 1980, the average capacity was 19.6 cubic feet of storage; by 2021, the most recent year with published data, it was 25.8 cubic feet."

Can Diet and Exercise Really Prevent Alzheimer’s?

"Early studies suggest that lifestyle changes such as diet, exercise, and social engagement may help slow or prevent Alzheimer’s symptoms — but the evidence is inconsistent, and many doctors remain cautious."

3 Science-Backed Ways to Avoid a Knee Replacement

"Every year, more than 700,000 Americans undergo knee replacement surgery. And researchers expect the procedure will only become more common as people strive for an active, pain-free life as they age. People usually get a total knee replacement when they’re no longer able to move through their daily life without constant pain. But, how can you build healthy, strong knees today that power you through walks and workouts for decades?"

How and When You Can See October’s Stunning Rare Supermoon

"Supermoons often appear in different colors, with some displaying a pinkish hue — such as the Strawberry Moon — or shades of dark red, known as a Blood Moon. Super blue moons can also occur, but don’t be fooled by the name. These moons are not blue, but rather varying shades of yellow, orange, and grey."

Daylight Saving Time Ends Soon. Here's When to Set Your Clocks Back

"The time shift is notorious for disrupting sleep patterns and schedules. Some politicians are pushing to abolish time changes and remain in daylight saving time, or DST, forever. If you, too, dislike how early it's about to get dark each day, just remember that brighter evenings will be back after four months."

What We’re Streaming 📺📲

We’re only sharing one stream with you this week, and if you’re wondering why, it’s because the Acquired team has once again done an in-depth job on Google. Note the run time for the episode below, it clocks in at a little over 4 hours. My advice is to take your time and savor this conversation and the insight it brings.

What We’re Reading 📖

Given the length of the Acquired Google podcast above and because we’re taking our time reading the book we shared last week (see below), we’ll have a fresh reading recommendation next time around.

Never Split the Difference: Negotiating As If Your Life Depended On It by Chris Voss

Life is a series of negotiations, and negotiation is at the heart of collaboration—whether you are a business executive, a salesperson, a parent, a community leader, or a spouse. As a former FBI hostage negotiator, Chris Voss gives you the tools to be effective in any situation: negotiating a business deal, buying (or selling) a car, negotiating a salary, acquiring a home, renegotiating rent, deliberating with your partner, or communicating with your children. Taking the power of persuasion, empathy, active listening, and intuition to the next level, Never Split the Difference gives you the competitive edge in any difficult conversation or challenging situation. This book is a masterclass in influencing others, no matter the circumstances.

After a stint policing the rough streets of Kansas City, Chris Voss joined the FBI, where his career as a hostage negotiator brought him face-to-face with a range of criminals, including bank robbers and terrorists. Reaching the pinnacle of his profession, he became the FBI’s lead international kidnapping negotiator. Never Split the Difference distills the Voss method, revealing the skills that matter most when it comes to achieving your goals in both your professional and personal life.
