Following up on our Universal Display OLED comments in today’s Daily Rundown video, Korea’s ETNews reports production at Samsung Display of foldable organic light-emitting diode displays for Apple’s AAPL first foldable iPhone model has begun ahead of its expected launch in 2026. The same report indicates Samsung Display, which is leveraging its expertise in aiding Samsung with its foldable smartphone models, is earmarking capacity of 15 million 7-inch foldable organic light-emitting diode panels for Apple.
For Apple, that display form factor would likely help the company tap the upgrade cycle across its estimated 1.38 billion global active iPhone user base. We’ve often discussed Apple’s ability to time the market, and while we have seen Samsung, Honor, Motorola, and others offer flip smartphones, Apple’s entrance into the category could be the tipping point. As such, Apple’s foray into that form factor and the likely copycat activity we’ve seen in the past would be a volume driver for Universal Display.
There is also the opportunity at Apple for foldable iPads as well as the adoption of organic light-emitting diodes into its Macs and other displays. As we think about this, Apple is expected to launch an ambitious pipeline of new products for release during the first half of next year, including a new low-end iPhone, multiple iPads, and new Macs. The company has already moved its iPhone line-up to organic light-emitting diodes displays, and with the latest iPad Pro, that move has begun with the iPad family. Here, too, Apple’s move to adopt the display technology to allow for thinner, lighter, and more power-efficient products would likely accelerate the industry shift from LCD displays.
As you can imagine, that shift, as well as adoption in other end markets, such as automotive interior and exterior lighting, and eventually the general lighting market, keeps us long-term bullish on OLED shares.
At the time of publication, TheStreet Pro Portfolio was long AAPL and OLED.
