Traders are constantly searching for ways to optimize their trading. We tinker with backtests, refine entry tactics and pivot strategies daily, all in pursuit of a fractional edge.
Yet, most experienced traders eventually realize that the most complex variable to solve for isn't the algorithm, it's the human sitting in front of the screen. Dealing with emotion is the final frontier of profitable trading.
Recent academic research provides a surprising insight into how we might manage those emotions. A study entitled "Don't Hold Back: Swearing Improves Strength Through State Disinhibition," published in American Psychologist this month and written by Richard Stephens and his colleagues, explores the tangible benefits of profanity. While the study focused on physical strength, the implications for the psychological arena of the markets are profound.
The 'Swearing Advantage'
The researchers found that participants who repeated a swear word during physical challenges, such as a chair push-up test, were able to hold their body weight for roughly 10% to 11% longer than those using neutral words.
Interestingly, the benefit wasn't physiological. It didn't trigger a "fight or flight" surge in heart rate. Instead, the mechanism was state disinhibition. Swearing reduced social and internal "restraint," allowing individuals to enter a flow state and push past self-imposed limits. It effectively allowed them to "not hold back."
In trading, we are constantly battling the Behavioral Inhibition System (BIS), which is the internal "brake" that causes us to freeze, second guess or hesitate. If profanity can trigger a state of disinhibition, it may be the unexpected circuit breaker needed to overcome these common psychological hurdles.
Three Ways Profanity Can Sharpen Execution
1. Breaking 'Analysis Paralysis'
The study noted that swearing helps reduce internal restraint. In trading, the most common form of restraint is hesitation.
We've all been there: the setup is perfect, the tape is moving, but a recent loss or a fear of being wrong keeps our finger off the trigger. Just as swearing allowed study participants to endure physical strain for 10% longer, a well-timed expletive might help a trader bypass the "prefrontal cortex override" that leads to missed entries. It shifts the brain from a state of monitoring and uncertainty to a state of decisive action.
2. Counteracting the 'Disposition Effect'
The disposition effect is our tendency to sell winners too early and hold losers too long, driven by loss aversion. Psychologically, the pain of a loss is twice as potent as the joy of a gain. However, swearing has been proven to increase pain tolerance, which is a phenomenon known as "hypoalgesia."
By verbally venting during a losing trade, a trader may effectively "dampen" the emotional sting of the red P&L. This emotional buffer allows for the disinhibited confidence required to follow a stop-loss protocol without flinching.
3. Facilitating the 'Flow State'
The researchers highlighted that swearing helps individuals enter a psychological "flow" — that elusive moment where you are perfectly in sync with the tape, executing without ego or friction.
When volatility spikes, the "fight or flight" response can cloud judgment. Because swearing provides a distraction from social anxiety and self-imposed limits, it acts as a mental reset, keeping the trader focused and grounded in a high-arousal environment.
Disinhibition vs Impulsivity
It is vital to distinguish between state disinhibition and impulsivity. Understanding this nuance is the difference between using profanity as a tool and using it as a symptom of a meltdown:
- Impulsivity is a reactive, unplanned burst of behavior, often driven by a lack of discipline. It results in "revenge trading" or abandoning your plan entirely.
- State Disinhibition is the removal of the mental blocks that prevent you from executing the plan you already have. It doesn't change the strategy, it simply clears the path for the strategy to be executed.
In essence, profanity shouldn't be used to justify a new dumb decision. It should be used to provide the "mental shove" needed to follow through on a good one.
The Law of Diminishing Returns
Before you turn your trading desk into a profane soundtrack, there is a catch. The potency of profanity is tied to its emotional shock value. Stephens has noted in related research that the benefit of swearing is like a drug: you can build a tolerance to it.
If profanity is a constant element of your vocabulary, it loses its "sting." If you are swearing at every tick and every minor fluctuation, the words become background noise. To use this as a tactical tool, it must be reserved for moments of peak stress or critical decision-making. It is a "break glass in case of emergency" maneuver, not a standard operating procedure.
The Bottom Line
I am certainly not advocating for a lack of decorum or suggesting that profanity is a substitute for eloquence. However, I am advocating for any tool that helps you manage your psychological state under fire.
Trading is a battle against your own biology. If a well-timed expletive is what it takes to shock you out of a freeze and into a state of execution, it might just be the most cost-effective edge you'll ever find.
