COST | Buy | 9 | $883 | 237 | 3.9% |
After you receive this alert, the Portfolio will buy 9 shares of Costco (COST) at or near $883. Following the trade, the Portfolio will own 237 COST shares, roughly 3.9% of the Portfolio.
We are putting our money where our comp sales mouth is, following the continued move lower in COST shares despite the growing confirmation signs that Costco continues to win consumer wallet share. While we are thrilled with the confirmation on Wednesday morning with TJX’s (TJX) 5% comps sales print for the October quarter, let’s remember that Costco’s recent string of adjusted U.S. comp sales figures:
- October 2025: +6.7%
- September 2025: +5.0%
- August: 2025: 6.7%
Sizing those figures up against the October quarter comp sales ones from the likes of Target (TGT) , down 2.7%, or Home Depot’s (HD) 0.2% figure, hammers home where consumers have been spending and, in our view, are likely to do so during the holiday shopping season. Remember, when it comes to Costco and holiday shopping, unlike some retailers, Costco is very well positioned to meet the demands of holiday entertaining, given its food and beverage offerings.
We will grant you that Costco shares have been a bit frustrating to own, but when we see confirmation points like the ones noted above, we’ll remain patient shareholders as we wait for the market to come around and see what we do.
We will also point out that this is not the average trade for the Portfolio given the pre-trade position size of COST shares. In our view, the strong disconnect between the share price and the comp sales figures is what is prompting this modest addition to our shares.
And as we make this, move we will adjust our panic point to $825 from $880, with the intention of moving that new panic point higher as COST shares rebound.
