After you receive this alert, the Pro Portfolio will sell the remaining 85 shares of Mastercard MA at or near $549. This will close out the Portfolio’s position, with this last slug of shares returning more than 55%.
We are following up on our opening comments from Thursday morning, closing out the Portfolio’s remaining shares of Mastercard to boost both its overall cash position and its defensive positioning. In addition to the concerns over low- and middle-income consumer spending prospects we shared with you on Wednesday, Trump tariff developments and layoff announcements in the last 24 hours add to the likelihood of slower spending ahead from that consumer cohort.
On Thursday morning, we learned that Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. plans 10,000 job cuts at his department. That builds on other recent announcements including fintech company Block XYZ will cut about 8% of its workforce, the U.S. Postal Service announcing it will slash 10,000 jobs, HP HPQ shedding 2,000 jobs, and other cuts at Goldman Sachs GS, Morgan Stanley MS, Starbucks SBUX and Chewy CHWY.
Added to other layoff announcements earlier this month, we’re more likely to see next week’s March Challenger Job Cuts report land closer to the 172,000 layoffs found in February than the 50,000 averaged over the prior four months. If we’re right, corresponding headlines for that March data are likely to result in low- and middle-income consumers re-thinking upcoming spending. Not good for the economy, and not good for payment volumes at Mastercard.
