We are seeing reports that on July 9, Samsung SSNLF will hold its next Unpacked event at which it is expected to launch the Galaxy Z Flip 7 and Galaxy Z Fold 7 handsets as well as the Galaxy Watch 8 smartwatch. Samsung is also expected to showcase its Galaxy AI suite of software features. We see the event as a likely catalyst for the Portfolio’s positions in Universal Display OLED and Alphabet GOOGL.
We’ve discussed how the larger surface areas for foldable smartphones drive larger consumption of Universal’s organic light-emitting diode solutions compared to traditional smartphone models, which are also migrating to larger display sizes. In addition to Samsung, we continue to see more vendors include foldables in their product lineup, and Apple AAPL is increasingly expected to bring a foldable product to market in 2026.
When Apple makes that move, it will likely be seen as a tipping point for the industry, leading to more foldable models hitting the market. The smartphone market is one part of our OLED investment thesis, which also includes organic light-emitting diode display adoption in other end markets ranging from tablets, PC notebooks, monitors and other display applications, as well as interior/exterior automotive lighting. Now that we are on the cusp of blue organic light-emitting diodes, longer-term, we see the technology following the path blazed by light-emitting diodes (LEDs) into the general illumination and conventional lighting markets. That keeps us long-term bullish on OLED shares, as does Universal’s IP licensing business.
Turning to Alphabet and Samsung’s upcoming Unpacked event, Samsung's Galaxy AI is a combination of Samsung's own AI models and technologies from Google, specifically Google's Gemini AI. As such, the event should showcase features debuted at Google I/O 2025 and serve as a reminder that Google should not be counted out on the AI front.
