We have learned all year that bouts of technical weakness represented only a pause in a steady rise in the averages.

Yesterday was another example of this — with deteriorating breadth, some pressure on the Russell index and rising indices on lower volume:

- NYSE volume 23% below its one-month average

- NASDAQ volume 7% below its one-month average

- VIX index: down 1.63% to 13.85

Yesterday, staples (and food stocks) got obliterated.

Perhaps it was the Novo Nordisk  (NVO)  pill for weight loss, perhaps tax selling.

I thought it was extreme:
