About most active stocks

The most active US stocks are the names trading the highest dollar volume in today's regular session — where the market is putting real money to work. Elevated volume often marks institutional accumulation or distribution, a reaction to fresh news, or heightened interest around an earnings report or event.

Ranking by dollar volume (price × shares traded) rather than share count keeps the list weighted toward the stocks that actually move the market, instead of low-priced tickers that trade millions of shares for very little value. Click any ticker to open its full quote page for the chart, financials, and latest news.

How we rank most active

Stocks are ranked by regular-session dollar volume (price × shares traded) across liquid US common stocks. Rankings refresh on a 60-second server snapshot, and displayed quotes update every few seconds while the market is open.

Frequently asked questions

What does “most active” mean?

Most-active stocks are those trading the greatest dollar volume during the session. Dollar volume multiplies price by the number of shares traded, so it highlights where the largest amount of money is changing hands.

Is high trading volume bullish or bearish?

Volume itself is neutral — it measures activity, not direction. High volume confirms the conviction behind a move, whether the stock is rising or falling, which is why traders watch it alongside price.

How often is this list updated?

Rankings are recalculated on a 60-second snapshot, and the prices shown refresh every few seconds during market hours.

Why rank by dollar volume instead of share volume?

Dollar volume avoids skewing the list toward very low-priced stocks that can trade huge share counts while representing little actual value. It keeps the ranking focused on the most economically significant activity.

Context summarizes recent news and may not be the direct cause of a price move.
